Description

An interdisciplinary team of researchers from the University of Georgia took on the challenge to understand the needs and developed a virtual world that recreates the family home and backyard. This new world enables families to interact using VR and mobile devices to share experiences, play games, watch movies, and spend time together. The technology behind the scenes measures engagement and reports data, enabling researchers to analyze trends in engagement and improve the experience. The University of Georgia team authored the Best Paper, “Virtual Living Room: Bridging the Physical Distance with Virtual Reality,” in the Simulation category at vIITSEC 2020. Watch the recording below.

With training and simulation for our military personnel, often our first thoughts are how to improve efficacy and efficiency around the jobs they performs—often overlooked is how we can use it to improve the “human” side of our service members lives—especially when deployed for long periods overseas. Can we use XR technology to improve the wellbeing and connectedness of our service members and their families with virtual family interactions that help reduce family stress and allow them to engage in family routines from any place around the world?

An interdisciplinary team of researchers from the University of Georgia took on the challenge to understand the needs and developed a virtual world that recreates the family home and backyard. This new world enables families to interact using VR and mobile devices to share experiences, play games, watch movies, and spend time together. The technology behind the scenes measures engagement and reports data, enabling researchers to analyze trends in engagement and improve the experience.

Join us to hear more about their research on building resilience in military service personnel and their families by focusing on family cohesion through XR technology. Hear how they have measured the improvements in participating service members' lives. Learn about the platform’s potential for anyone who travels regularly for work or even for those who are separated from loved ones like many are experiencing because of the pandemic.
