How does motivation relate to training?
Motivation with regard to training can encompass various elements. Within the simulation, it is important to keep the user’s attention to ensure that training concepts are absorbed. Although many designers feel that colors, sound and motion will increase recall and retention, if the learning method itself is not engaging then these extras will simply serve as distractions (Semler, 2002c). Effective use of multimedia, taking into account usability guidelines, can engage the learner if the task is directly related to the learning objective. Learning theories should first be examined when developing the content of the training program, while visual improvements should be added later. With regard to the motivation of the individual, general research has shown that learners have certain expectancies about their abilities, the task, and the value of task achievement. These expectancies contribute to whether the individual begins the task in a motivated state (Driscoll, 1994). To ensure continuing motivation, learners must satisfy the expectancies they have established at the beginning and attribute successes to their own strategies and efforts. |
