How frequently should training occur?

There are no general guidelines on how frequently simulator training should be conducted, as most guidelines are specific to the simulation or system. However, general research has shown that training in small increments has a better effect on performance then training presented in full at the beginning (Keeley, 1997). In simulators, performing training in small increments is essential because lengthy sessions in simulators have been known to cause headaches, dizziness, spatial disorientation, and other symptoms of simulator sickness that can adversely affect performance. Tasks need to be practiced on a regular basis in order for individuals to retain the information learned and to ensure efficient transfer to the real-world environment. Unfortunately, resources for holding regular training sessions with simulators are often limited. Therefore, it is often necessary for trainers to substitute online training classes and self-study methods as low cost alternatives. Fortunately, this blended learning approach as been shown to provide a valuable mix of training for the operator (Semler, 2002b).
